From landing a dream job abroad to building love across borders, these stories reveal the true power of language learning.
Over my 30 years teaching, I’ve watched so many students turn their lives around with English. Do you know that feeling when you’re stuck in a rut, dreaming of something bigger, but wondering if it’s even possible? If it does ring a bell, let me share three stories that still give me chills. Maybe one will hit home for you and light that spark to go after the goal you’ve shelved for too long.
Marianna started learning English from scratch, she only knew basic German back then. But she had fire in her: craving a job in a luxury five-star hotel in the Emirates. She was studying for 6 months three times a week. Apart from that, she was binge-watching films and videos in English to tune her ear in and get used to a variety of accents. We were drilling hospitality vocab, numbers, customer chats, to name just a few.
She flew to an interview and ta-da! She landed a job there. No fancy title at first. She began as a cashier, ringing up guests, practising every “hello” and “thank you.” Did she have any doubts and moments of despair? Plenty. Lonely, enduring long shifts, combatting the imposter syndrome. Yet she grabbed every chance and proved to herself that she was on the right path by climbing fast. A few years later she got promoted to a finance analyst, now on maternity leave, happily married, and thriving. That ex-cashier launched her dream life. Her grit says English flips the script. If you’re also stuck in “good enough, maybe it’s your chance to grow from zero to hero!
Words can brew the best love stories. Natalie showed up nervous after meeting her Italian guy on a trip. “Reading and answering his messages? Total panic mode,” she’d laugh when we first met. We built her up: ice-breaking phrases, date talk, family intros, common conversational formulas to ensure their communication ran smoothly. Their first stuttery calls turned smoother and visits sparked real magic.
To say I was surprised and thrilled to bits when I received their wedding invitation card is an understatement. I danced at their wedding as the newlyweds’ family friend and am still reminiscent of pasta mountains, toasts blending two languages, and tears of joy. Now they’re settled in Switzerland but travel to Italy at weekends, and their lovely daughter switches from English to Italian with ease.
Natalie and Lorenzo – English erased their walls and fused their worlds. If you have heart eyes but are still tongue-tied, go for it and make it happen!
Language pulls you into the life you want. Alexandra, engaged and excited, tackled French for her fiancé’s Dubai whirlwind where she’s attending expat brunches and French-speaking deals. “I fake-nod through it all,” she confessed during our first class.
Tailored lessons not attached to coursebooks nailed it: flights to Paris to meet his family, friendly dinner debates, wedding dreams, holidays together and the traditional exchanges ”Comment s’est passée ta journée?” or “On se voit se soir !”. Now their common future looks brighter and they’re planning homes, adventures, and on top of that, there are no more sidelines or awkward pauses. Simple communication skills built these unbreakable bonds. Are you loving across borders but feeling out? Alexandra’s living proof: words grant you a seat at the table.
