After 17 years in the language education industry, The Bridge has become one of Slovakia\u2019s most recognized language schools. We spoke with Radka Vajgelov\u00e1<\/strong>, who works as Business Operations Manager at the school, about what sets the school apart, why it invested in the internationally recognized EAQUALS accreditation, and why successful language learning is about much more than quick results.<\/p>

In the Beginning, We Wanted to Do Things Differently<\/strong><\/h3>

Why was The Bridge language school founded 17 years ago, and what motivates you today?<\/strong><\/p>

Our motivation has changed over the years. In the beginning, it was a desire to do things differently. Today, it\u2019s more of a sense of responsibility toward the people who trust us\u2014both students and teachers. And we\u2019re still driven by the same thing: seeing that what we do works.<\/p>

What kind of students do you value the most?<\/strong><\/p>

All those who are ready to work on themselves.<\/p>

Quality Over Empty Promises<\/strong><\/h3>

How is The Bridge different from other language schools?<\/strong><\/p>

What actually happens in the end. High-quality instruction and service. We teach English, not rocket science. There\u2019s a lot of competition, and every school claims the same thing: \u201cWe\u2019ll teach you to speak in 3 months.\u201d That\u2019s hardly likely\u2014otherwise, we\u2019d all be polyglots. We understand that it\u2019s hard for people to navigate the maze of options. But we want our satisfied students to speak for us. Everything else is irrelevant.<\/p>

What Does a Successful Student Look Like?<\/strong><\/h3>

How do you define a successful student?<\/strong><\/p>

Someone for whom English isn\u2019t a bonus, but a foundation. They know they can\u2019t get anywhere without it, even if they might not be using it every day right now. Just acquiring new information in English is on a completely different level than having to wait for someone to translate world news for you first. Even that translation goes through a process, so it\u2019s like drinking distilled water.<\/p>

A successful student, however, is also one who realizes that they have to put in the work themselves. Education isn\u2019t a service, even though advertisements for it may make it seem that way. We want to attract students who know that if they want to move forward, they have to work on themselves. With this approach, they then achieve results.<\/p>

And what is our school here for? If you have confidence in the institution, you arrive with strong motivation in an environment that propels you forward. You believe that we will help you, and we welcome students with the belief that they can succeed. It\u2019s a positive psychological synergy that yields tangible results.<\/p>

An Investment into Accreditation<\/strong><\/h3>

Why EAQUALS international accreditation? You\u2019re the only institution in Slovakia to hold it.<\/strong><\/p>

Preparing for accreditation has helped us grow in many ways. It taught us how to create an educational ecosystem that continues to function even as the school expands. When you have a large number of students, you need a large number of instructors, and you can\u2019t monitor every class of every course. You need processes and a monitoring system that ensures quality not because of one great instructor, but as an institution. We want students to be confident that no matter which course they enroll in, they\u2019ll receive the same standard of instruction. Of course, problems do arise\u2014we\u2019re only human, after all. But we\u2019re able to resolve them quickly, and they\u2019re truly few and far between. Our motivation for pursuing EAQUALS wasn\u2019t just to have a nice logo, but to streamline our processes and ensure quality control as we grow.<\/p>

Can Language Apps Replace Teachers?<\/strong><\/h3>

Language-learning apps are all the rage right now. What\u2019s your take on them?<\/strong><\/p>

Apps are great, and I tip my hat to anyone who can manage to study on their own. It takes a lot of self-discipline, and very few people can pull it off. For the rest of us, a high-quality course with a motivating instructor is the better option. The teacher guides you through the learning process and is key to maintaining long-term motivation. We learn a language to communicate with people. A good teacher can sense your emotions, detect when you\u2019re tired or losing focus, and respond accordingly. No app can replace that.<\/p>

There Is No Single Right Method<\/strong><\/h3>

What do you do differently in terms of methodology?<\/strong><\/p>

We have an L&D expert, Andrea Z\u00e1humensk\u00e1, whom every school should want on their team. Thanks to her, we don\u2019t have to worry about finding one \u201cright method\u201d that doesn\u2019t work anyway. There is no single right method; there is only the student and their individual needs. And then there\u2019s the teacher, who can read those needs and tailor the entire process to them.<\/p>

It sounds simple, but building a team this way costs more money and time. Teachers must be able to work independently. We don\u2019t have part-time workers. We have teachers for whom this is a full-time job and who know what they\u2019re doing.<\/p>

What Students Rarely See Behind the Scenes<\/strong><\/h3>

What does the school do for students that isn\u2019t immediately apparent?<\/strong><\/p>

Our goal is to simplify the entire educational process as much as possible. We have a relatively large administrative team that works every day to make the student experience unforgettable.<\/p>

Here\u2019s an example from a typical day: we often get into a passionate debate about where to place a particular student or how to help them achieve their goals. Three or four of us colleagues discuss it spontaneously. We have over 1,200 students. Is it a waste of time? Maybe. But the desire to find a solution for everyone is stronger.<\/p>

Room for Growth<\/h3>

What do you want people to think of you in five years?<\/strong><\/p>

The same thing we want them to think now: this is the school where I want to study. Where I\u2019ll hire employees. Where I\u2019ll send my child. And maybe they\u2019ll think: too bad I already know English. And then we\u2019ll say: that\u2019s okay, we have a program for you, too. Cognitive training, coaching in English, soft-skills training. There\u2019s always something new to learn. After all, lifelong learning is part of our school\u2019s values. We provide a space for growth.<\/p>
