Have you ever been completely sure you said something correctly in English, only to be met with a confused look or a polite smile from a native speaker?<\/p>
If so, don’t worry\u2014you’ve just experienced one of the most common parts of learning a foreign language.<\/p>
The truth is that most Slovak learners make the same mistakes, especially in the early stages. And there’s a good reason for that.<\/p>
When we learn a new language, our brains naturally compare it with our native one. We translate expressions word for word, look for familiar patterns, and assume that similar-looking words must have similar meanings. Unfortunately, that’s exactly where many misunderstandings begin.<\/p>
Let’s take a look at eight of the most common English language traps\u2014and, more importantly, how to avoid them.<\/p><\/figure>
False Friends: Words That Look Familiar but Mean Something Completely Different<\/strong><\/h3>
False friends are among the biggest challenges for language learners. These are words that look similar to Slovak words but have entirely different meanings. Here are a few that regularly catch Slovak learners off guard.<\/p>
Actually \u2260 aktu\u00e1lne<\/strong> This is probably the most common example. X Actually I live in Bratislava.<\/em> If you mean that you currently live in Bratislava, say: \u2713 I currently live in Bratislava.<\/em> or \u2713 At the moment, I live in Bratislava.<\/em> The word actually means in fact or as a matter of fact\u2014not currently<\/em>.<\/p>
Eventually \u2260 eventu\u00e1lne<\/strong> Many learners assume eventually means maybe<\/em> or possibly<\/em>. It doesn’t. Eventually means in the end, finally or after some time. Example: \u2713 Eventually, she found the right job.<\/em><\/p>
Sympathetic \u2260 sympatick\u00fd<\/strong> This one causes a lot of confusion. Sympathetic means compassionate and understanding. If you want to describe someone as pleasant or easy to like, use words such as: nice friendly likeable<\/p>
Fabric \u2260 fabrika<\/strong> Despite looking almost identical, these words have completely different meanings. Fabric means cloth, textile. A fabrika<\/em> is a\u00a0factory.<\/p>
Control \u2260 kontrolova\u0165<\/strong> In English, control usually means to manage and to operate. If you mean “to check”,<\/em> the correct verb is simply: check. For example: \u2713 Can you check my homework?<\/em><\/p><\/figure>
Translating Directly from Slovak<\/strong><\/h3>
One of the most common mistakes is translating Slovak expressions word for word.<\/p>
Unfortunately, what sounds perfectly natural in Slovak often sounds strange\u2014or simply incorrect\u2014in English.<\/p>
“I’m 30 years old.”<\/strong><\/p>
Many Slovak learners say:<\/p>
X <\/em>I have 30 years.<\/em><\/p>
The correct version is:<\/p>
\u2713 I am 30 years old.<\/em><\/p>
In English, we don’t have an age\u2014we are a certain age.<\/p>
“I’m cold.”<\/strong><\/p>
Not:<\/p>
X I have cold.<\/em><\/p>
But:<\/p>
\u2713 I am cold.<\/em><\/p>
Many physical feelings and states are expressed with the verb to be, not to have.<\/p>
“It makes sense.”<\/strong><\/p>
Not:<\/p>
X It gives sense.<\/em><\/p>
But:<\/p>
\u2713 It makes sense.<\/em><\/p>
This is a fixed expression that simply has to be learned as a whole.<\/p>
“I’ll keep my fingers crossed.”<\/strong><\/p>
Not:<\/p>
X I hold my fingers.<\/em><\/p>
But:<\/p>
\u2713 I’ll keep my fingers crossed.<\/em><\/p>
Every language has its own idioms, and translating them literally almost never works.<\/p>
Forgetting Articles<\/strong><\/h3>
Articles are one of the biggest challenges for Slovak learners because Slovak simply doesn’t have them.<\/p>
That’s why sentences like this are so common:<\/p>
I bought car.<\/em><\/p>
The correct versions are:<\/p>
\u2713 I bought a car.<\/em> Or \u2713 The car is outside.<\/em><\/p>
Articles may seem like tiny words, but they play an important role. They tell your listener whether you’re talking about something general or something specific, and they make your English sound much more natural.<\/p>
Using the Wrong Prepositions<\/strong><\/h3>
Prepositions are one of those areas where translation simply doesn’t work.<\/p>
For example:<\/p>
X depend from<\/em> \u2713depend on<\/em><\/p>
X married with<\/em> \u2713married to<\/em><\/p>
X interested on<\/em> \u2713interested in<\/em><\/p>
X listen music<\/em> \u2713listen to music<\/em><\/p>
The good news is that these combinations appear again and again in everyday English. The more you read and listen to authentic content, the more naturally they’ll become part of your vocabulary.<\/p><\/figure>
English Isn’t Pronounced the Way It’s Written<\/strong><\/h3>
If there’s one thing that surprises almost every learner, it’s English pronunciation. In Slovak, pronunciation is relatively straightforward\u2014we generally pronounce words the way they’re written. English follows a very different set of rules. Take these four words: though<\/strong> \/\u00f0\u0259\u028a\/ through<\/strong> \/\u03b8ru\u02d0\/ tough<\/strong> \/t\u028cf\/ thought<\/strong> \/\u03b8\u0254\u02d0t\/ They look similar, but they’re all pronounced differently. That’s why it’s important not only to read new vocabulary but also to hear it spoken. Being Afraid to Speak<\/strong><\/h3>
This isn’t really a language mistake\u2014it’s a mindset.<\/p>
Many learners understand grammar, can read articles, and follow videos without difficulty. But the moment they have to speak, they freeze. Why?<\/p>
Because they’re afraid of making mistakes. The reality is simple: mistakes are part of learning. Native speakers rarely expect perfect English. Most people appreciate your effort to communicate far more than perfect grammar. In fact, many small mistakes go completely unnoticed as long as your message is clear.<\/p>
The only real mistake is staying silent because you’re afraid of getting something wrong.<\/p>

Many learners memorise vocabulary lists like this:

Then, when it’s time to speak, they’re unsure which verb fits the situation. A much better strategy is to learn vocabulary in chunks. For example:
– make a decision – take a photo – do homework – get married – catch a bus – have breakfast
Learning complete expressions helps you sound more natural and allows you to speak more fluently without translating every sentence in your head.<\/p>
Thinking You Need to Understand Every Word<\/strong><\/h3>
This is one of the biggest obstacles when reading or listening in English.<\/p>
Many learners come across one unfamiliar word and immediately pause the video or reach for a dictionary. Most of the time, that’s unnecessary. Even in your native language, you occasionally hear or read words you don’t know, yet you still understand the overall message.<\/p>
The same is true when learning English. Your goal isn’t to understand every single word\u2014it’s to understand the main idea. Once you stop focusing on every unknown word, you’ll notice that your listening and reading skills improve much faster.<\/p><\/figure>
