\u201cI looked it up in the dictionary, but it gave me three translations and I don’t know which one is correct.\u201d<\/p>
Does this sound familiar? Almost every language learner has experienced this situation. Sometimes we come across a word we already know, yet it seems to have a completely different meaning in a particular text. Other times, a dictionary offers several possible translations, leaving us unsure which one to choose.<\/p>
The reason lies in the nature of language itself. Many words have multiple meanings, and a single expression can often be translated in several different ways. That is why learning vocabulary is not just about memorising words. To understand them correctly, we need to understand the context in which they are used.<\/p><\/figure>
What Is Context?<\/strong><\/h3>
Context includes all the circumstances surrounding a word, phrase, or sentence. When reading a text, this may include the topic, the type of text, the setting, and the writer’s purpose.<\/p>
For example, imagine you are reading a sports article and come across the phrase shot on goal<\/em>. In a sports context, you immediately understand that it refers to an attempt to score. Without context, however, you might associate the word shot<\/em> with a firearm.<\/p>
Context helps us select the correct meaning from the different options provided by dictionaries, translators, or search engines.<\/p>
How to Develop Context Awareness<\/strong><\/h3>
When reading or listening in a foreign language, try asking yourself a few simple questions: 1. What is this text or conversation about? 2. Who is speaking, and who is the audience? 3. In what situation is the communication taking place? 4. Which meaning makes the most sense in this context? 5. What information surrounds the word or phrase?<\/p>
You can also practise contextual thinking in everyday life by asking yourself: – Where am I? – What am I doing right now? – What is happening around me? – What type of language would be appropriate in this situation?<\/p>
A useful exercise is to describe everyday situations in your target language. This not only strengthens vocabulary but also helps you practise grammar naturally, for example by using different verb tenses in real-life contexts.<\/p><\/figure>
Focus on the Bigger Picture<\/strong><\/h3>
Although this exercise may seem simple, it trains your brain to look beyond individual words and focus on the overall situation.<\/p>
When you learn to recognise context, it becomes easier to understand vocabulary, choose the correct expressions, and use grammar more naturally. As a result, reading, listening, and communication become far more intuitive.<\/p>
Final Thoughts<\/strong><\/h3>
When learning vocabulary, the goal is not to memorise every possible meaning of a word at once. A far more effective approach is to learn the meaning you encounter in a specific situation. Over time, through reading, listening, and communication, you will naturally acquire the other meanings as well.<\/p><\/figure>
