Yet once again, nature quietly became the central character of the experience.

As a teacher, I couldn’t help but notice something else along the way: small, almost invisible details that reveal a very different approach to education and cognitive development.

Learning Through Movement

Before visiting Finland, I had heard that children cycle to school even in winter, and that Oulu is known as the cycling capital of the north. Before Norway, I was told that children spend time outdoors every single day—no matter the weather.

But hearing about it and actually seeing it are two entirely different things.

Starting north of the Arctic Circle, where conditions are at their harshest, these habits aren’t symbolic—they are real. In Rovaniemi, known globally for its Santa Claus Village, people still commute by bike not because it’s convenient, but because it’s natural. It’s simply how you move.

In Norway, I saw the same pattern. When we were leaving Kristiansand, a major football match was underway. The vast areas outside the stadium were filled with bikes and scooters. People arrived in heavy rain, choosing physical discomfort over the stress of traffic.

It made me think of Slovakia. You still see this natural movement in villages—young and old relying on bicycles for everyday life. But in cities, we’ve largely moved away from it.

And yet, it’s not lost. It’s just waiting to be rediscovered.

Because movement is not only about transport—it’s about cognition. Movement sharpens attention, supports memory, and regulates emotions. A body in motion creates a mind ready to learn.

Learning Through Discomfort

This brings me to something even more present than cycling: nature.

Modern culture often tries to make nature safe, predictable, and sanitized. We remove risks, flatten terrain, and eliminate discomfort. We try to create environments where nothing unexpected can happen.

The Nordic approach feels fundamentally different.

In Finland, I noticed it. In Norway, it became impossible to ignore.

This is a country of cliffs, cold seas, unpredictable weather, and vast, untamed landscapes. And while they’ve built bridges and tunnels to connect places, they have not tried to remove the challenge of the environment itself.

Instead, they teach people how to exist within it.

There’s a line from an old Czech comedy that comes to mind:
“We’ll put you on the rock and see if you hold on… you’ll bathe in cold water, so you get used to it.”

In Norway, this philosophy is real.

When cliffs are everywhere, you don’t hide them—you build diving platforms and teach children how to jump safely. When winters are harsh, you don’t stay inside—you learn how to function within them.

This is not about recklessness. It’s about adaptation.

And cognitively, it matters.

Because resilience, decision-making, risk assessment, and confidence cannot be learned in perfectly controlled environments. They require exposure to uncertainty, to challenge, to mild discomfort.

Effort Over Convenience

There’s another layer to this story—one that’s particularly relevant today.

Finland was once seen as a model for digital education. Schools embraced technology at scale. Yet today, there is a clear and conscious shift happening: a return to pen and paper.

Why?

Because not all tools develop the mind equally.

Writing by hand slows thinking down. It strengthens memory encoding. It requires focus. It creates cognitive effort—and effort is where learning lives.

Screens are efficient. Paper is effective.

And in a world increasingly driven by AI and automation, this distinction matters more than ever. If everything becomes easy, frictionless, and instant—where will deep thinking come from?

Without effort, there is no real growth.

Growth Before Measurement

Finally, there is the question of performance.

In many Nordic schools, children are not graded early. They are not ranked, compared, or pushed into competition from the start. Instead, they are encouraged to explore, to try, and to enjoy the process of learning without the pressure of constant evaluation.

At first glance, it may seem like a lack of ambition.

In reality, it is the opposite.

Because once children find intrinsic motivation—once they enter the state of flow and genuinely want to improve—competition comes naturally.

And when it does, they are ready.

Just look at the Olympic results. Norway, with a population similar to Slovakia, consistently outperforms global giants like the United States or China in winter sports.

That’s not an accident.

It’s the result of a system that prioritizes long-term development over short-term measurement.

What This Means for Us

There’s a quiet lesson running through all of this:
1.
