From a student’s perspective, it seems simple — they arrive for class, open their notebook, learn new vocabulary, communicate, and then go home. But behind every single lesson lies a great deal of work, planning, thinking, and often improvisation.

As a Slovak and English teacher at a language school, I see every day how many details need to come together for a lesson to feel natural, smooth, useful, and motivating for students. Today, I’d like to take you “behind the curtain” and show you what preparing for a language lesson really looks like.

Every Lesson Begins Long Before It Starts

Preparation does not begin by opening a coursebook five minutes before class. In reality, it starts the moment a teacher gets to know their students. Every group is different — some students learn quickly, others need more time; some love grammar, while others simply want to speak and communicate.

When planning a lesson, a teacher constantly thinks about questions such as:
– What do the students already know?
– What are they struggling with?
– What motivates them?
– Which activities engage them the most?
– How can their attention be maintained throughout the lesson?
A lesson is never just about “covering” a topic. The goal is to create an environment where students feel safe, are not afraid to make mistakes, and are willing to communicate.

Creating Materials: More Than Just a Worksheet

A large part of a teacher’s work is invisible. Often, it involves hours spent preparing materials. Sometimes coursebooks are used, but very often teachers create their own activities to make lessons more engaging and tailored to specific students.

When teaching languages, it is not enough to simply explain grammar. A language needs to be heard, used, practiced, and experienced in different situations. That is why lesson preparation often includes:
– creating worksheets,
– searching for articles or videos,
– preparing conversation questions,
– designing games and activities,
– creating presentations,
– selecting vocabulary appropriate to students’ levels,
– correcting homework and tests.
Sometimes preparing a single 60-minute lesson can take two or even three hours — especially when the teacher wants to create something creative and interactive. Although prepared materials can often be reused with future students, every lesson still requires sensitivity and the ability to adapt the pace and teaching style to a particular student or group.

Teaching Slovak and English Requires Different Approaches

Although both involve language teaching, teaching Slovak and teaching English differ in many ways.

With English, students are usually exposed to the language through films, music, or social media. Teachers therefore focus mainly on helping students gain confidence in communication and overcome the fear of speaking.

When teaching Slovak to students from completely different language families, the challenge becomes even greater. Since their native language often has very little in common with Slovak, students are introduced to an entirely new system of grammar, pronunciation, and declension. This means the teacher must explain everything clearly, patiently, and in a simple way — above all, in a practical context, so students do not feel overwhelmed by theory and are able to use the language in real-life situations, even after just a few lessons.

During the Lesson, the Teacher Is Constantly “Reading the Room”

Many people think teachers simply explain material during class. In reality, they are constantly observing their students’ reactions.

Do they understand?
Are they losing focus?
Is the pace too fast or too slow?
Should the activity be changed?
Does someone need encouragement?

A good teacher often adjusts the lesson plan during the class itself. Sometimes an activity works perfectly; other times improvisation becomes necessary. Flexibility is a major part of teaching.

The atmosphere in the classroom is equally important. Teachers must be ready to motivate students even on days when they are tired after work or school. Language lessons are not only about knowledge — they are also about energy and atmosphere.

Every Lesson Also Comes with a Great Deal of Administration

In addition to teaching itself, there are many tasks, which students rarely see:
– tracking attendance,
– evaluating students’ progress,
– communicating with parents or clients,
– planning courses,
– correcting homework,
– preparing tests,
– organizing materials,
– replying to emails and messages.
Modern teaching also often includes working with online platforms, creating digital materials, and preparing online lessons.

Teachers Never Stop Learning

As the saying goes: “Learning a language is a journey, not a destination.”

This quote perfectly describes not only students, but teachers as well. Teachers are constantly learning — discovering new approaches, improving the way they explain concepts, searching for more creative activities, and adapting to the needs of their students.

Ironically, one of the biggest parts of a teacher’s job is their own education. Languages evolve, new teaching methods appear, technologies change, and new ways of motivating students continue to emerge.

That is why teachers often:
– attend training sessions,
– follow new trends in education,
– read professional materials,
– experiment with new activities,
– improve their own language skills.
A good lesson never happens by accident. It is the result of experience, preparation, and continuous growth.

The Greatest Reward Is the Small Progress

Despite all the hard work, teaching languages is a beautiful profession. The greatest reward is not perfect tests or flawless results. It is the moments when a student speaks without fear for the first time, begins to understand a film in English, or confidently orders a coffee in a foreign language.

These small steps are what make all the effort meaningful.

Behind a single lesson lies far more than most people realize. There is time, energy, creativity, patience, and a great deal of empathy behind it. And although students may only see one lesson per week, teachers often think about it long before it begins and long after it ends.

Perhaps that is why teaching is more than just a job. It is a process in which not only the student learns, but the teacher as well.

Written by: Karin Krajčírovičová

Discover what happens behind the scenes of a language lesson, from lesson planning and materials to student motivation.

[62

post-27518","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-articles

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.9 -
