{"id":27481,"date":"2026-05-12T21:53:20","date_gmt":"2026-05-12T19:53:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thebridge.sk\/?p=27481"},"modified":"2026-05-12T21:53:24","modified_gmt":"2026-05-12T19:53:24","slug":"does-language-change-how-we-see-the-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thebridge.sk\/en\/does-language-change-how-we-see-the-world\/","title":{"rendered":"Does Language Change How We See the World?\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In\u00a0<em>Arrival<\/em>, a linguist\u00a0decodes an alien language\u00a0with a circular writing system\u00a0and\u00a0begins to\u00a0experience\u00a0time\u00a0as\u00a0circular\u00a0itself.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0a\u00a0sci-fi take on\u00a0linguistic relativism,\u00a0known as\u00a0the\u00a0Sapir-Whorf\u00a0hypothesis\u2014the idea that language\u00a0can influence how we organize\u00a0and perceive\u00a0reality.\u00a0A\u00a0notable\u00a0example\u00a0is\u00a0how Russian has separate words for light and dark blue, which makes speakers distinguish between the two more readily than languages where \u201cblue\u201d is seen more\u00a0as\u00a0a spectrum.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing as mind-bending as in the\u00a0film,\u00a0of course, but English does something interesting with time too.\u00a0Slavic languages\u00a0like to clarify\u00a0whether something is finished or still in progress.\u00a0English\u00a0lets you\u00a0manipulate time differently:\u00a0<em>I\u00a0have finished, I\u00a0had been\u00a0working, I\u00a0will have\u00a0sent<\/em>.\u00a0It becomes more layered,\u00a0more meandering\u00a0as it lets you stretch a moment\u00a0or\u00a0zoom in on duration and sequence.\u00a0This in turn\u00a0stretches\u00a0our thinking,\u00a0carving new pathways in the mind for organizing events\u00a0as we speak.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">English also handles motion and direction differently. Think of phrasal verbs\u2014<em>take away<\/em>,\u00a0<em>move out<\/em>,\u00a0<em>pick up<\/em>. In Slovak, a prefix like\u00a0<em>od-<\/em>\u00a0immediately\u00a0signals direction (<em>od<\/em>s\u0165ahova\u0165\u00a0sa), but in English, meaning unfolds sequentially: you get the action first (<em>move<\/em>), then the direction (<em>out<\/em>).\u00a0While\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0only a split-second difference, it\u00a0shifts the focus from the result of the movement to the process itself, as\u00a0meaning\u00a0arrives with some delay.\u00a0This can subtly shape not only how we\u00a0understand\u00a0language, but also\u00a0how we think when we speak.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apart from\u00a0organizing how we see\u00a0reality, language\u00a0also\u00a0gives\u00a0it\u00a0texture.\u00a0Take\u00a0Potawatomi,\u00a0for example,\u00a0a\u00a0Native American language\u00a0made up\u00a0of\u00a0about\u00a070% verbs and only 30% nouns. Instead of \u201ca rock,\u201d you\u00a0would\u00a0say something closer to\u00a0<em>being a rock.\u00a0<\/em>In\u00a0<em>Braiding Sweetgrass,<\/em>\u00a0Robin Wall Kimmerer argues that this way of speaking reflects a deeper attentiveness to the living world,\u00a0a kind of ecological awareness. Not because\u00a0the language alone creates this way of seeing, but because it\u00a0carries\u00a0traces\u00a0of\u00a0a consciousness shaped\u00a0by a different landscape and history.\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same is true of other languages as well, though not\u00a0always in the same way.\u00a0English,\u00a0by contrast,\u00a0is\u00a0relatively noun-centric, much like many Slavic languages. Yet both systems allow for flexibility\u2014each in its own\u00a0way. Slovak, for instance, relies on inflection to shape how meaning unfolds. English has its own\u00a0features. We turn\u00a0those same\u00a0nouns into verbs constantly: to\u00a0<em>hammer<\/em>\u00a0a nail, to\u00a0<em>water<\/em>\u00a0the plants,\u00a0to\u00a0<em>house\u00a0<\/em>a friend.\u00a0Even simple descriptions can\u00a0come alive: trees\u00a0<em>dotted<\/em>\u00a0the hillside.
